Obama Condemns Violence; Cancels Joint Military Op With Egypt

(Martha's Vineyard, MA)  --  President Obama strongly condemns the deadly violence in Cairo and confirms cancellation of upcoming joint military exercises with Egypt.  In a statement from Martha's Vineyard, where he is vacationing, Obama said violence is not the answer and has created a "more dangerous path" to democratic governance in Egypt.

The death toll in Egypt is in the hundreds as the military continues a brutal crackdown on supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsi.  President Obama noted that Egypt is a key U.S. ally in the Middle East.  He also said the U.S. will not take sides in the ongoing dispute.  Egypt receives more than one-billion dollars in annual aid from the U.S.  Some lawmakers are pushing the White House to end the aid.
